Installing new warm roof on existing tongue and groove base
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.01 PM
Hi, Planning to have a new flat roof installed. Currently have a 1960’s felt roof which needs replacing. It’s have a few leaks, but overall the tongue and groove base is very dry. My question is would it be ok to reuse this base, and have the insulation layer added on top or would it be better to remove it all and have new ply board bas? I am mainly thinking of improving the heat efficiency, I think perhaps the tongue and groove may let heat up though, compared to larger new boards. Thanks for any opinions!

I would recommend removing the existing tongue and groove base and installing new ply board. While the existing base may appear dry, there could be hidden moisture or rot that may compromise the integrity of the new roof. Additionally, new ply board will provide a more stable and even surface for the insulation layer and new flat roof material. This will help to ensure better heat efficiency and minimize the risk of any future leaks. While it may be a more expensive option, investing in a new ply board base will provide a more durable and long-lasting solution for your new flat roof.

Personally if it was myself quoting for this I would go ontop of the existing roof insulate and apply new osb boarding better thermal value that way . Then fibre glass it . Lasts longer so you get more for your money.

For my part, I recommend the use of new materials, as they are treated and more efficient for the future. The roof is one of the foundations of the house, and care must be taken in using quality and quality. I recommend using glass fiber materials for external insulation, as its repair is very easy and lasts for many years. Good luck.
