Removal of load bearing wall

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

Can you install an RSJ 20 years after a loadbearing wall has been removed? The ceiling and joists appear to be bowing.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I am presuming the joist are the ones linked to the ceiling if so you can put the RSJ in but would require propping ceiling and floor joist up to there original position

Well mate, it's not ideal, but it can be done. If you've removed a loadbearing wall 20 years ago and the ceiling and joists are bowing, it's a clear indication that there's a problem. Installing an RSJ now will require some careful planning and may involve some additional work to support the existing structure. It's best to bring in a structural engineer to assess the situation and determine the appropriate size and placement of the RSJ. You don't want to risk compromising the structural integrity of the building. But once the RSJ is installed, it should help support the load and prevent any further bowing.
