Plasterer changed way of charging for second part of project

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.06 PM

Hello, Looking for some advice on how to resolve a dispute. We had a plasterer do the work on our three bedroom house and he did the bedrooms, bathroom ceiling, living and dining rooms and kitchen. He initially completed the bedrooms and bathroom and quoted a price per room in his first invoice to us. Upon completing the second half of the job he changed his invoicing to a daily rate and is trying to overcharge us separately for materials - the amount on the second invoice is close to x4 on the first... We never agreed to a daily rate and he cannot produce the evidence for the total £££ materials used. In this case we are refusing to pay the invoice. How to best approach this and resolve the matter?

If he gave you a quote in writing for the job &he has underestimated it's his problem, if how ever he has not given you a quote in writing or it's only an estimate it goes the other way & by refusing to pay you leave yourself liable, sorry but this should have all been agreed long before the job started not at the end, communication is required and a compromise maybe needed to avoid a legal fight. Talk to your tradesman. Good luck Alex

Completely agree with Alex, if he has provided a quote for the total works then he has to stick to that price, if an estimate then the price is not fixed. Bit odd that its been broken down into rooms and then days, but both parties should be 100% clear before commencing work

If you have any details of an agreed quote in writing its the plasterers risk if he's under charged, if its an estimate the other rooms may have needed lots more work and preparation which would lead to extra work, if you have nothing in writing at all you can get a surveyor that is on neither side to look at the work and put forward an quote of works, I can't remember exact process name but iv been through it, take into account if you don't have an exact quote you may end up worse off or better off,
