Window cills were repaired but work is substandard- what should I do!?

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.52 PM

A roofing company said they could repair my sandstone window cills and also do roof work. They said they would repair the cills by building a wooden frame - which they would leave on for a week - then remove and repaint the cills. They repaired 3 cills by taping the plaster (assume it was plaster or concrete) up with tape then painting over it. They said this is common practice and called bonding. They did not use the wooden frames. I was away and when I got home a few days later the tape had come off and was blowing in the wind. The cills look dreadful and the tape can clearly be seen. I’m not happy with the workmanship and they said they would rectify the job- but will be using the bonding method again- which is not what they said in the first instance. The cills look dreadful and I’m waiting for them to call back to rectify their repair. Will I pay them if I’m not happy with their work? I’m not sure what I should do. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thank you

Sandstone cills can be repaired but is a slow laborious job being built up slowly dependent on how bad a condition they are in, if this company has not done what they say they are doing you need to tell them & put a stop to any further damage they will do. Good luck Alex

Personally, I would be reluctant to have a roofer doing stone repairs. Get them to stop and have a magic man come take a look, those guys can work wonders on on all kinds of repair jobs.

Stone cills can be repaired. The damage has to be chopped out and built up in stages. This takes time but done right makes them look brand new. The is videos on YouTube and the Internet that will give you an idea of what needs doing so you now what your talking about when employing a company. Payment wise if you're not happy with the job tell them when it's done right you'll pay. Or pay for the materials first to get it done and the rest after when your happy.

If you’re looking at repairing them yourself cut square sections out where damage is and repair with premixed mortar. Sandstone premix will cost around £50-£70 a bag and is premixed white cement and kiln dried sandstone dust. Cut square sections out and wet area for 48 hours using squirt bottle or wet hessian, once 48 hour time has passed apply premix mortar and float in to original shape using a piece of wood with a smooth sanded finish (float), once the mortar has been floated in to desired shape sponge off surrounding stone with clean water and sponge (fresh) make sure all of surrounding area is clean as premix can stain, then cover in damp hessian (not soaking wet) and leave for 48 hours. To match the sandstone you require i would contact a company to match colour, Rowland stone masonry is usually very good. Thank you

Sounds like a bodge job and likely to be cement. The damaged area needs to be cut out until hard stone is reached, key it with a chisel, add stainless steel pins and copper wire if needed, soak area, build up gradually through the day with a sandstone premix from rowlands.
