Roofing

Work is of poor standard - should I pay ?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

I hired a roofing firm to replace fascia’s soffits etc and I needed the 3 exterior sandstone window cills repairing. The roofing company said they could repair the cills and came out to repair the cills before they started on the roofing work. The cills were repaired and I was away for a few days. On my return - I noticed the cills had been plastered I assume - then taped to hold the plaster together (the roofing company said it’s called bonding) and painted black. They look dreadful. The tape has peeled off the main part of the window cill and is blowing in the wind. I took photographs and immediately contacted the company and said I was not impressed with their workmanship and wanted them repairing properly. They originally told me they would fit a wooden frame and fix the cill then come back a week later to remove the frame and paint the cill. I had no idea about the black tape and they didn’t fit the wooden frame. The problem is I have paid them £750 deposit for cladding materials and to do roof as well as cills. I’ve told them I do not want roof work completing as not happy with their work and to fix cills and take off what I owe them for cills from My deposit. They said they paid £520 for roofing materials and when they take them back they will be charged a 20% stocking fee - which they will need to Pay- I’ve never heard of this - can anybody please advise? Thank you

While there might be a restocking charge ,as a so called roofing company there will be other roofs they can wreck with the materials they have purchased, Personally I would not part with an other brass farthing. Good luck Alex

If ur not 100% happy with u never pay I would not take payment off a customer if they not 100% happy with my work it should be rectified or no payment made and as for the building merchants taking 20% that’s not true if I do a job and materials left over always take it the cost of job and return it to save customer and get full money back

A restocking charge is a genuine thing, although depending on how much of a good relationship the contractor has with the merchant will usually depend on whether it even gets charged. I myself have the restocking charge waived as i spend a lot of money with our local builders merchant "interline". I imagine he's trying to pull a fast one and to recoup so of the labour and time they've spent "trying" to do the cills of your external windows. unless those materials are on site they wouldn't of been charged them. Just ask to see an invoice which you're fully in your right to. I personally would not get them to do the roofing job what so ever, if your gut is telling you something 9/10 its the correct answer!
