Kitchen Fitting

Fixings for kitchen wall units.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

Hello all New home and adding 2 wall units to existing utility room. I’ve got IKEA Enhet cupboards which Mount by screwing 2 screw/ bolt into wall then hanging cupboard before tightening with washers inside the cupboard. There’s a void behind the cupboard (through a plastic bracket) of approx 22mm which means some of the sleeve bolts won’t work. I’m drilling into masonry. The assembly instructions specify pan head screws which seem obvious to prevent the bracket slipping over the head of the screw. Problem is I can’t find anything with the right head (even hex might do) that’s long enough because of the void, that will also fit through the keyhole washer internally. Anything I have found is only maybe 4-5mm diameter which I didn’t feel was strong enough to support the load. Maybe I’m over estimating the length/ diameter of screw needed for the load- I thought at least 6 preferably 8mm x 100mm. Builders merchants no help as offer me shorter and thinner screws which I don’t believe will support load. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Go to a local builder's merchants and ask them, they will have something and be able to explain what to do and how to do it. They deal with this kind of thing many times a day, so they will know what they are doing.

5 x 100 single thread standard wood screws (not self countersinking) using 6mm good quality wall plugs recessed into the wall around 12mm should work perfectly well. I will often insert 2 wall plugs, in line, to ensure the screws are not penetrating into a void and strengthen the fixing.

You could try using 5x100 Pz head screws combined with appropriate cup washers (nickel plated) this will give the screw a "seat" & prevent the screw pulling through. For additional support, add a penny washer between cupboard interior & cup washer. Sometimes it's necessary to add a baton behind the wall unit at the top to fill the void, & also @ 100mm up from the bottom. This is screwed to the wall & then the wall unit screwed to the baton. You mentioned a void of 22mm, caber floor is the right thickness, but needs to be cut into strips approx 100mm first. Hope this helps!
