Joiner replaced section of damaged chipboard floor but not uneven
Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.52 PM
Hello, i had a water damaged section of chipboard floor in my kitchen after removing all cabinets etc, I hired a joiner to cut of the damaged sections and repair however the new sections are higher then the existing floor now by a good few mm leaving a lip. I top him I was unhappy with this as I cannot floor on top. He has now put 3.6mm plywood sheet across the full floor however I can still feel the ridge of the new section of boards (middle of floor) underfoot.
What should I do? I feel like only way to fix would be to take the plywood up and the new boards up and start again but I don't want to be charged more as already paid a substantial amount for this work
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
The problem is if you get in any other tradesperson they will want to be paid, so It means getting the first person to come back and sort it out, most carpenters would have been able to shim or shave the board to be flush. over time the thickness of boards do vary a fraction matching old and new is an art in itself.
Learnt that if the right thickness is not exact then go lower and build up with a leveller.
This should have been a simple job and by adding thin boards will only make the problem worse as these will tend to lift because they are thin. The only solution would be to kindly ask for a reduction in the cost. Be persistent and you may get lucky. Then hire someone to do what you initially wanted. Unfortunately a hard lesson learned. Good luck with the outcome.
You should get him back to do the job again, correctly. It sounds like he has used 22mm boards for the replacement and he is matching up to 18mm boards.
