Fixing a pergola to porcelain patio

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

My patio consists of 150mm type 1 base with 20mm porcelain slabs on top. Can I fix the pergola to the slabs using chem fix & 10mm stud or will the type 1 NOT be sufficient enough? I've been told if fixing to the slab this way there should be a concrete base beneath, which means lifting the slabs up and digging out the type 1 which I want to avoid?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You need to dig out or auger in the posts

I wouldn't suggest fixing it to the porcelain once drilled into the porcelain it becomes a weak spot and prone to crack over time. I'd suggest take up the 4 porcelain tiles and dig and set the posts in postcrete and then cut your slab back around the post.

For this scenario you would absolutely need to lift the slab, dig out the type 1 and dig holes for the posts. In my opinion, the post holes should be dug at a depth between 300mm and 450mm, depending on the weight and length of posts and overall weight of the structure. Set the posts with a good, strong mix of cement and ballast and make sure the posts are set solid for safety reasons and peace of mind. Cut slab to suit or make good with building sand and cement.

If I was doing it I would lift the slab dig down 300mm X 400 X 400 lay the slab bak and drill through the slab into the concrete 100mm and fix with either chemfix, resin bolt or rawll- bolts.
