Gas Works

Gas meter existing location

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Currently our gas meter is inside an integral garage on an internal wall. We are looking at getting the room converted into a useable living space (office / gym etc) and happy to keep the meter where it is, but do we have to move it to an external wall to get building regulation sign off or can it stay where it is?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can site a meter pretty much anywhere except a bathroom, only make sure room is adequate ventilation and easy access to the ECV, Emergency control valve.

You get many gas meters internally In domestic properties. It's worth checking in to but as long as the gas meter is secure and meets current regulations I couldn't see there being any issues with it remaining where it is.

It’s all about budget tbh if you don’t want to spend any money then leave it where it is but if it were my property I would have it moved outside, your supplier has to do this but reconnection to meter has to be done with a gas safe engineer.

No. It is not allowed and classed as a “built over service” and needs to be moved to an outside meter box. Ring gas transporter on 0800111999 and ask them for a built over service survey
