Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Hi just wondering if anyone can help! Had a new boiler pipework/ radiator system 2 years ago we always hear a ticking noise when heating is turning on and when its on , also when turning our taps off it makes a loud noise and then few mins later we hear a banging noise , and when the bathroom mixer tap is running in the middle not hot or cold we can hear the water running so loud literally hear it in the other rooms that the water is running finally in the kitchen when the hot water is on it goes cold after a min or 2 any advice? Thanks sorry if it doesnt make any sense its hard to describe noise!

ticking noise is just pipework expanding and contracting as it heats and cools, noise when turning taps off is water hammer, caused by high pressure, loose unclipped pipework, ball valve judder, and worn ceramic discs in taps, water noise is from high pressure you could fit pressure reducing valves, also lagg all pipework where you can as this can deaden noise, to answer your kitchen tap query we would need to know where your hot water is derived from ie combi boiler or hot water cylinder.

As stated in another answer, ticking is due to the thermal expansion of pipes with expansion and contraction. Banging on taps is usually due to poor clipping as water cannot be compressed like air- you could add an arrestor valve though. Your best idea is to make sure you have a qualified plumber to visit so you can show him your system and he can evaluate and quote for the correct solution.

Air felt around the pipes should help with the expansion tapping
