Wickes Magic Corner: Struggling to open.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.33 PM

Our 6 year old magic corner has become difficult to open without effort. It looks as though the main running mechanism might have become separated or dislodged from its mate and is now coming out too far instead of closing into its sheath (sorry I don't know the technical terms). Comparing it to the other cupboard the "wrong" one comes out to far showing a white plastic piece that isn't visible on the other magic corner. It means the opening motion is very firm to start with and then opens stutteringly. Have tried oiling the runners after wiping off the dust. Can't find the installation manual and Wickes no longer have this type in their website. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can synchronize the mechanism?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Soft Close Magic Corner Pull Out corner Storage basket System. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to now exactly what the problem is with these types of pullout baskets with just a description. The main thing to remember is there are two main component parts to this system, one attaches to the door a the other part of the mechanism attaches to the carcass with a runner system and pivot bar system connecting the two. Luckily you have one that is working correctly so the first thing you need to do is remove everything that is stored in those pullout baskets then remove all the baskets by just lifting from the mechanism on the door and from within the carcass. Once that’s done you will clearly be able to see the actual mechanics of the mechanism, so it’s a very important step. Now your ables to clearly compare the the good pullout with the bad one and the problem will then become obvious. Often it can be as simple as a few screws have come loose so if you can’t see anything obvious make sore everything is secured tightly to carcass and door. Hope that helps..

First of all, it's excellent that you have a working model to compare the failing one to. However, by the sounds of how you describe how the mechanism is flowing (i.e. stiff and then juddering) there is either a foreign object in the runner or there may have been too much weight in the basket and the arms have become bent. I would suggest removing all the items from the basket and using a vaccum with a fine nosel to remove anything from the runners OR purchase a compressed air tube used to clean screens and monitors by blasting them with air - you can pick these up from most electrical shops now. I would give the runners a good blast with one of those to see if that works. Failing that, I would remove both baskets and compare the components for movement and parts to see if anything is missing or in the wrong shape and you can therefore make repairs or adjustments accordingly. Hope this helps and you get sorted.

To resolve the issue you could try the following : Check if any screws or bolts are loose and tighten them if necessary. Try adjusting the position of the runners to make sure they are aligned properly. Use a level to ensure the cupboard is straight and not causing any pressure on the mechanism. If none of these options work you could try contacting Wickes customer support to see if they have any advice or can provide you with a copy of the installation manual.
