boiler cupboard
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.33 PM
Hello. I am planning on building a cupboard to house a new WB boiler. The boiler/ pipework will be installed by a gas-safe engineer. Re: the cupboard, I was planning on using a timber frame with a backing. To the back of the cupboard will be re-enforced noggins in between the studs to support the boiler, 22mm plywood on top of this, then hardi-backer board. I understand that boilers cannot be installed on combustible material but have seen many photos of boilers installed directly on plywood. What would you suggest to make a boiler cupboard? Thanks.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Boilers can be installed on to combustible material they ask for the flue as it passes through the material to have a 25mm clearance so hang the boiler and leave a space above to run the flue through the wall.

Hi there this is Michael
As you mentioned, boilers should not be installed on combustible materials, such as plywood, due to fire safety concerns. Even if you've seen photos of boilers installed directly on plywood, it's not a recommended practice, and you should follow the manufacturer's guidelines for installation.
To build a safe and compliant boiler cupboard, you can consider using non-combustible materials, such as cement board or fire-resistant plasterboard. These materials are designed to withstand high temperatures and can provide a suitable surface for the boiler to sit on.
Alternatively, you can use a purpose-built boiler cabinet, which is made of non-combustible materials and designed to provide a safe and secure housing for the boiler. These cabinets are available in various sizes and styles, and they come pre-assembled, making installation quick and easy.
It's important to remember that gas boiler installations should only be carried out by qualified and registered Gas Safe engineers. They can provide guidance on the appropriate materials and installation methods to ensure your boiler is safe and compliant with regulations.
