Will a smart plug on LED light definitely work

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.45 PM

I would like to get one of these custom LED lights that look like neon signs. I asked the seller whether a smart plug works on it to turn it on and off and they said no. I asked why and they didn't say. It has a switch for on/off on it, so I don't know if this has anything to do with it. But at £140 I don't want to take the risk unless lots of people say it would definitely work! Its for my hallway so I'm not going to go and turn it on and off manually every day. Here's the product before customised: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B09S3PJ497/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b__o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Edit: thanks for reply. How do I check the smart plug has a min load? It was a present and has basic mini instructions. I don't think they put that in descriptions either if buying one online from Amazon? Id rather use the one I have as I have it. Can more people reply please if they read this, hoping to be sure so I can purchase the light. Thx

Some smart devices have a minimum load threshold. If the plugged in load is less than the minimum threshold it could cause problems. I’d check if the smart outlet has a minimum load and if the light in question does not exceed this then I wouldn’t waist your money. Other than that I can’t think of any reason it wouldn’t work but I’m not going to pretend I know everything there is to know about smart outlets.

There's a possibility that the switch which the product comes with automatically switches off when the power is turned off (Which is essentially what a smart plug is doing) and the only way to turn the sign back on will be to push the switch again once power has ben introduced, maybe look for one that doesn't have the dimming function and it could potentially work.

Yes it will work. Smart sockets are like relays they use wifi low current to activate a electromagnetic coil that operates a on/off switch. So doesn’t matter the load. Think of them as a remote switch. I have used these styles of sockets on various stuff they are not load dependent.
