Ideally side windows that overlook adjacent homes should be avoided . In some instances a side window , may be acceptable if there is more than 2m between properties and the window must be obscure-glazed.

As a general rule, side windows should be obscured glazing, meaning no visibility through them - so there is no overlooking. We have completed a number of projects with side windows and Planning Officers have requested Ground Floor and First Floor windows to be obscured glazing at a level of 5, where 1 is clear and 5 is obscure.
The Planning Portal confirms this, but only refers to upper floor windows:- https://www.planningportal.co.uk/permission/common-projects/doors-and-windows/planning-permission
