I would always recommend a professional fitter for both.

To lay carpet make sure your floor is today to begin with. Then if you are ticking to skirting (so not under it) then I place the gripper about 5mm away so there’s a nice tight gap or the carpet to hold. If it’s to tuck underskirting I usually go for 5-10mm. All done by eye the longer you’ve done it. Lay your underlay down to the inside area of your grippers. Then lay your carpet, you can use your foot to take any rises out of the middle. Then you can start stretching where it needs it, cutting with a Stanley of a pile cutter. Great tool for running along the skirting, very quick too. The tuck with your Bolster or tucking knife. Then…. Enjoy your new carpet 😊

Unless you want to buy the correct tools, i would call the services of a professional. There is more in to it than people think. You don't just roll it out and cut it. I wish 🤣
