Wiring for Vortice Quadro Super I GB Fan

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

Hello, Trying to wire a Vortice fan. I have three main wires to connect into the fan - Brown, Black, and Grey. Behind the main light switch, Brown is connected to L1 and Black is connected to L2 - which one is permanent live and which one is switch live? Fan has 3 input connector holes - L2, 3, and N. Fan manufacturer says Brown goes into L2 and Black goes into 3, and Grey goes into N - this sequence does not activate overrun in fan. Is this correct? Thank you

The first question you should answer is, is the circuit protected by an RCD and are the earthing and bonding arrangements adequate? Ideally use a continuity tester to identify which is connected to line, switched line and neutral. Typically brown is L1 (permanent), black L2 (switched) and grey is neutral but the electricity doesn’t care what colour the wiring is so anyone could have wired it in any configuration. As a general rule brown sleeving is used to indicate the switched line and blue sleeving indicates the neutral. It is preferable to use a continuity tester as this test can be carried out on a safely isolated circuit. If your personal understanding requires instructions on how to carry out either a full continuity test, safe isolation procedure or full earthing and bonding checks then I would encourage you to hire a registered competent electrician to sort it out for you as electricity can be shocking. Pun intended.

I would suggest doing a bit of testing at the light switch. This will take the guesswork out of it, because without doing this you are relying on the previous electrician knowing what he is doing and because he hasn't marked the switch live it's a bit suspect.

The way WE would wire this (from source) would be: Brown - permanent live Black - switched/live grey - neutral. The thing is though it could be wired differently at source. This means you would need either testthe ends of these cables with probes to establish thesetup OR you would need to open up the connections from the local light fitting. Not sure if either is possible for someone who isn't a qualified electrician though!
