Fitting pvc to wall to hide pipes

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

I previously had pipes boxed in with wood which started to rot. I pulled it out and took a row of tiles with it. I bought a length of gutter which covers it perfectly but not sure how to attach it to the wall to be waterproof. I will tile up to the plastic or slightly underneath.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It sounds like you will only end up with problems again in the near future, as you are not planning to use the correct materials again. If you was to bodge it... products like FixAll would keep it in place to avoid drilling holes in it, then you would need to apply a silicon seal to stop water getting in, BUT guttering will expand and contract ever so slightly with the humidity and the constant change in temperature, this will cause it to pull away from these products and eventually let water through causing damage to the property and resulting in a costly repair. You should build the box frame, cover in harder backer/ cement board or moisture resistant plasterboard, then cover with tile and grout, or a shower wall material, and finally silicone any internal corners etc. All the best, MPH-SERVICES

Gutter isn't recommended as a method to hide internal pipework. The wood that was used previously would be the materials to use, and if they are rotting, that would suggest there is a damp problem, which I would recommend finding out what is causing it and fix.

Hi Katrina I've seen many installations whereas the user thinks it's a pipe problem however usually comes back to bad grouting or not water-proof tiles fitted. Pipes when they go hot and the cold they can produce condensation, but that's should not be a lot to cause your woodwork to rot. I believe even if you hide the pipes with the gutters I still think you'll see rotten woodwork if the tiles aren't fixed. I hope this helps.

Put a thin button of wood along the wall that the gutter will sit on. Using OB1 silicone, silicone along the length of the gutter at top and bottom. When the silicone drys the gutter won't move.
