Remove unwanted exterior pvc window sill on bay window

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

We have a rectangular bay window with a flat roof. uPVC windows were fitted by previous window, replacing the original wooden bay, but a 7cm sill was added so rain water running off the flat roof hits the sill, very noisy every time it rains. The original wood bay had no sill, just flush. Is it possible to back to 1-2cm, or completely cut away the sill so the water will just drain off the roof and hit the ground as originally designed? Without it looking like a mess.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

the window company has used the wrong cill, it sounds like they have used a 150 cill instead of a stub cill which is only 85mm

as previously said by other member, wrong external cills have been used. They should have used 90mm cill instead of 150mm.

A cill must be fitted with rhe upvc windows because of the concealed drainage slots under the front edge of rhe frames so any water that builds up inside the frame can drain away, and as per the previous answer it does sound like the wrong size cill has been used it should be a Stubb cill of 85mm or 90 mm

It would be normal to use a regular 150 cill but it isn't normal for rain to be dripping off a roof like that. I might consider a bit of guttering with return before cutting the cill back. If that doesn't work then it is possible to cut the cill and make it look decent with a trim, good mitres and a white seal, but you'd have to re cut drainage and it isn't ideal. The other option is to order a new stub cill, you will have to give measurements to a window firm which can be taken from the inside edge. But this is quite a job, needing props and maybe even a complete refit.
