Sound insulation of bedroom wall
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.06 PM
My house is very old and suffers from poor sound insulation due to the walls being so thin. I can hear my next door neighbours talking or watching something on their ipad in my bedroom and so I’m desperately want to soundproof the room. Can anything be done without making a mess? We 100% do not want to hack the wall as the bedroom is fully furnished after work a few years ago (we had quiet neighbours back then)! I’ve read about acoustic curtains & acoustic boards, what do the experts think would be the best plan of action for me? Thanks Andy

Sound travels through vibrations in timbers such as the floor and ceiling joists so it’s very difficult to eliminate completely but there are products available to limit what you will hear by constructing a new partition slightly away from the party wall, filling the void with an acoustic insulation and using fixings designed to reduce the vibrations where it meets floors and ceilings
So you wouldn’t have to create any dust by removing the current party wall substrates
It can be expensive in terms of material costs rather than the labour but there’s options to reduce the price depending on what you are looking at spending and also the noise you can live with
I hope this helps
