High moisture in walls after neighbours extension is taken down

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.06 PM

Hi, Our neighbour had part of her extension taken down that was attached to ours. The part that was taken down still has plaster and tiles from the old bathroom and directly behind this is our kitchen. She never finished it and we have damp in the kitchen and the wall is yellowing. Are inside bricks waterproof ? Should it be finished with a waterproof finish?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would ask your neighbour to view the works that's been carried out. This could be rectified by your neighbour and you with a discussion and plan. Then I would contact your local council IF action isn't taken to resolve the damp issue. Good luck.

The demolition needs completing ie tiles and plaster/plasterboard removing, as these can act as a sponge to the elements, also with the wall now being turned to an external, chances are it would need to be repointed using correct mortar to suit property and cavity tray with weep vents installing to bring up to regulations

You need to take the only tiles off to give the wall time to breath and then render or seal with a waterproof

It hard to say exactly without seeing it but it sounds like the exposed wall is a party wall not a cavity wall .cavity walls prevent damp transfer whereas a party wall would act like a sponge
