Packing in bottom of joist hanger to lift joist
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM
Hi, Is it ok to have a the bottom of joist hanger lower than the bottom of the beam it attaches to then be packed up to make the joist sit level with the bottom of the beam? The ceiling it is creating will be plaster boarded and plastered under and beyond the beam and should be level. Experie, thank you. I ask because some of my joists have packing which is why the ceiling bows down a little in that spot. I have not done a DIY, this was a build contract job. Cheers Again

Hi no would be the short answer. There are different joist hungers for different depths of rafters which should suite. Joist hungers are a structural item and cannot be replaced by adding timber packing etc as this will rot over the years which means your rafter also ends up sagging.
You could just use smaller battens around the ceiling if you wish to lower the ceiling slightly.
Hope that helped.
Thanks
