Laying a granite hearth on top of floorboards

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

I have a granite hearth that I want to lay on top of an existing concrete constructional hearth. The concrete is almost flush (~1-2mm) to the pine floorboards. Will there be issues if the granite is simply placed on top? The granite is slightly wider than the concrete (~7cm each side) and therefore will partially rest on the floorboards. Perhaps a cushioning layer between? The fireplace will be decorative only and I want to avoid cutting the floorboards.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would bed it on using a clear silicone specifically ct1 on the pine floor boards this will bond the hearth but also give flexibility and make up the discrepancy in the floor height Cheers hope this helps

Hi Lance Depends on the overall dimension of granite hearth if flat bottomed then you need to bed on either sand/cement sub base or floor tile adhesive. If the new hearth has a upstand border underneath then I would again use adhesive to support the centre.

You can use a drywall advise. If want to go off fast add a little cement. Make think. Use rubber mallet or block of wood to make level. Try to bring to edge’s. Point after use a bit black die to make good. Mark innes. Innes construction

Ct1 would work. Or a low module sealant. Just make sure your granite has a 12mm lip minimum
