What is the proper way to apply Diamond Matt or a Durable Matt paint over bare plaster?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.51 PM

I'm seeing a lot of conflicting information and I would be grateful for someone who has experience with durable matt paints like Diamond Matt. I have a new build house with bare plaster. My attic has had a mist coat with 50/50 contract matt. Will it be OK to apply Diamond Matt over this, or should I have used a durable matt as a mist coat, or used an acrylic primer undercoat? I'm worried using a contract matt as a base may cause adhesion issues. However, it is the most 'cost effective' method of mist coating the entire house. Many thanks in advance.

The 50/50 most coat should be enough if it was done right. If you are unsure, then by all means mix up for example a 70/30 for the first coat and then apply normal coats on top. It’ll take more work to fix it the paint comes away from the wall

Contract matt as a mist coat is fine and durable emulsion should go over it without any problems. You will find that most durable paints can be used thinned down, as a mist coat which can be more convenient but obviously more expensive.

Hi, As said before contract matt as mist coat is good. 50/50 for me is too much. Diamond Matt is really tricky to apply. If you don't have any expierience with decoration you may not be happy with the result. As it is a trade paint it is thick. Add a little bit of water to the first coat, you need to test it how much. Second coat can have some water as well. Be quick and keed the wet edges when painting.

Use contact matt for mist coat thinned 20% plus depending on plaster finish. Rub down and prepare dry mist coat, apply mist coat any filler. Apply 2 coats of Diamond Matt thinned slightly, enough to make the emulsion flow. Work quickly and keep wet edges, once applied leave to fully dry before applying 2nd coat. Use this method and you should be fine
