Smell in sink in downstairs loo and bathroom

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.33 PM

I have a smell coming from my sink in the bathroom and downstairs toilet. Both sinks do not have a "U bend" pipe fitted under. If I get one fitted will this get rid of the smell?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes it will, the water in the trap provide a seal from the main drainage stopping smells from coming in.

You bet - all units have to have a trap. If you can imagine the pipework pretty well goes directly into the sewer, and the movement of air down there will push any smells directly into your home.

yes if you fit traps to both basins you will stop the smell from drains entering the building.

Are you? Benz is supposed to stop smells from coming up the sink and this may be enough, however, the smell is also a sign that your drains may need cleaning and if you're going to put a u bend in then I was just giving the pipework a clean at the same time. Also, if there is a particular problem in this area, it may be worth putting a dedicated non-return valve on the waste pipe as well.
