Do visor cooker hoods only extract out of the top? How to avoid overhang?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.33 PM

Hi, I'm in the process of replacing the kitchen and the oven/hob will be going at the bottom of the chimney breast. Rather than extracting through the stack via ducting, I hoped to keep it simple and use a visor cooker hood for recirculation. The kitchen already has trickle vents and an axial extractor fan. The models I have found recirculate air through the top near the front meaning the visor cooker hood will overhang the chimney breast. Is it possible to get visor cooker hoods that recirculate air through the rear/sides or underneath? I can then keep the cooker hood completely underneath the chimney breast with no overhang. Thanks

"Most visor cooker hoods extract air from the top of the hood. However, some models also have an option to extract air from the back.To avoid overhang when installing a visor cooker hood, you should choose a hood that is at least the same width as your hob or cooker. For example, if your cooker is 60cm wide, choose a 60cm wide visor hood. You should also consider the height of the hood, making sure it is installed at a height where it can effectively extract steam and cooking odours while still allowing enough headroom for the cook".

Okay, so I would strongly advise against using such a cooker hood. I suggest installing a built-in hood which looks much better, and also recommend making an external extraction system. Don't rely on all the advice from the salesperson that a closed air circulation is just as good as an open one. We can avoid problems with carbon filters that tend to get clogged quite often.

I agree with Ergo Property's answer. Just bear in mind that the minimum hight above the hob is governed by the manufacturers instructions which will give the minimum height to install the extractor above a gas or electric hob and have the overriding say over any other regs.

Can only push air upwards on visor extractor.
