Unsupported downstairs window replacement apparently carrying weight of upstairs wall and window

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hi everyone I have a window that needs replacing on the ground floor. I have been informed that the current window should have some kind of metal bar or support to carry the weight of the above floor and window. I've been told that this means that the downstairs window is supporting the weight of the above wall and window so taking it out may be an issue. I would really appreciate what precautions should be made when replacing the downstairs window if this is the case as I really don't want the above to collapse when this window is replaced. Many thanks

A window of any kind will never be supporting weight , there will always be a lintel above which might not be visible but will be there, taking out this window wont be a issue

Depending on how long the window was put it it may not have a lintel but it can be changed but you will need to have an angle iron put in to carry the weight

There's not always a lintel fitted as the last answer suggested. You'd be better to get it checked out first
