Is it Artex or Anaglypta?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hi all, I have no idea what it is that's started to peel and crack on my walls. It looks like artex but it's started to peel and crack and it pulls / snaps off easy from what I think is plasterboard underneath. Just a few mm thick. I'd love to get rid of it. Seems to come off easy enough but obviously don't want to disturb any asbestos if artex! Would artex snap off so easily or is it just old Anaglypta that's been painted over do you think or something else? Cheers.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi artex is rarely used on walls, mainly ceilings My guess is its really old anaglypta with years worth of paint on top I would peel of what you can and use a wallpaper steamer for the hard bits

Artex is used on walls as well as ceilings. I would get it tested to be 100% sure as if it’s artex and not Anaglypta then you don’t want to be scrapping it off or stripping it with a wallpaper stripper. Artex can peel off and snap off if the existing ceiling wasn’t sealed correctly in the first place. To be sure get it tested.

I would say that would be a premixed texture coating like polyripple as that goes Brittle with age its a misconception that artex contains asbestos The truth is the textured coating that came in from eastern block countries in the 80s and early 90s did contain small amounts of blue asbestos

Sorry but must say, it is not a misconception about asbestos in artex. And, blue asbestos is the most hazardous. Take care. Houses built in the 70's have artex ceilings which contain asbestos. Your not even allowed to drill to put down lights or spot lights in them.
