Difference between seal rubber colour strips

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.51 PM

Hi I'm installing some second-hand sliding doors. The fixed window parts have two sets of rubber seals. One set has a red line on the reverse, the other a white line. I'm wondering what the difference is and which set go where? Also do either require gluing in place before putting in the glass or are they kept in place by the pressure from the glass? Thanks

Hi there depending on how old the set of patios are the gaskets are one should be a (fir gasket) that you have to push into place into the frame better if you soak them in warm water and soap mixed makes it easier Fit glass units place beads in then same again with the other gasket (wegde) in bucket of soap and water start at top and push in to to trap glass in Hope this help

Hi it sounds like you've got two different sets of wedge gasket. Just check to see if the red strip is removable - sometimes the manufacturer includes this in the wedge design, it allows you 1mm of adjustment during fitting. It's not a big issue, as you can simply identify what thickness you require,eg 4mm/5mm and buy enough for both doors Cheers Terry

Don’t use warm water as gasket will stretch when warm and shrink when cold leaving gaps in the corners especially if you a novice

To avoid the gasket "shrinking" after a while is quite easy by first cutting the gasket to length before putting it in. When pressing the gasket in, most people stretch it without realising. So if the gasket then is "too long" at the end it can be pushed back instead of cutting it short and thus avoiding it "shrinking over time". The stretching from the warm water is hardly noticeable. Soapy water definitely helps getting it in easier and also any pushing back is much easier.
