Soot falling out of my ceiling

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.51 PM

I'm having some electrical work doing and I need to take a strip of the ceiling down. As I started a large amount of soot fell down so I immediately stopped. After taking a picture above the ceiling I can see that the soot is islolated to one area, but it's that area that I need to cut out for someone to do the electrics. Is it safe to carry on cutting out the ceiling and then just cleaning it all up?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you wear breathing apparatus and goggles you should be fine just note it makes a good bit off mess and isn't easy to scrub off if it gets on your skin

Please make sure you’re wearing the correct PPE before removing any section of the ceiling. I’d advise buying a decent face mask as the cheap thin ones are not very efficient

I would suggest having a smoke test done on your chimney to determine where the soot is coming from....fix the issue, clean/clear the soot then continue with the electrical work.
