Replacing a ceiling pull cord switch for electric shower

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.45 PM

I replaced the pull cord switch in the bathroom ceiling of my sons apartment. The shower now works with the new cord however the neon light is permanently on even when the switch in the off position. Does this sound ok or have I wired the circuit cable and the appliance cable to the wrong sides of the switch?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The neon being permanently 'on' is usually caused by wiring the permanent live conductors to the 'load' side of the switch - you need to check this. Also to consider is a burnt wire commonly caused by a loose connection to the switch. You must cut away all signs of overheated wire back to where there is bright copper. Failure to do this will mean that the connection is likely to overheat and would cause a dangerous situation. Make sure the new connections are tight also with the correct sized screwdriver. Always ensure power is isolated but ultimately hire a qualified electrician to ensure your safety. ABS ltd.
