Electricians and electricians mate information

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.45 PM

Hi everybody, I am stepping into a new role and need to know what electricians do and what electricians mate do. Qualifications needed to work on site. I believe I have enough knowledge on these such as C&G 5357 etc. The only one I am currently stuck on is: “how they fit into the project work flow (when and where do they appear and at what stage on a new build scheme and refurbishment project).” I believe it’s as soon as the structure is done (1st visit) then again after plastering (2nd visit)? I do apologise if I’m completely wrong but if anybody could help it would be really appreciated. Thank you

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Samad, from the three questions you ask I recommend: 1) what you asked - 'what electricians do and what electricians mate do?' You need to look up the definition online and go from there, as the areas covered are vast for both groups - if you narrow the question so one would know what it is in relation to, (domestic installations, commercial, and their relevant sub categories etc) then you could get a more specific answer to this. 2) what you asked - “how they fit into the project work flow (when and where do they appear and at what stage on a new build scheme and refurbishment project).” Again this is far too vague to give you anything helpful - workflow for what, where? more specifics necessary - also note - this will be a variable from project to project - so you'll need to outline these possible variables. 3)what you asked - "I believe it’s as soon as the structure is done (1st visit) then again after plastering (2nd visit)? I do apologise if I’m completely wrong". No apologies needed, just more data, this may be sufficient as the setup for a rewire within a house, but its nothing like the requirements for a train carriage rewire and so on, I think a more specific question is required. what structure? where? reactive? proactive? repair? installation? etc And qualifications to work on site are dependant on the required works and the site type - house? oil rig? subway? school? the one you list is just one of many, you may need to locate them all if your range of sites requires it. Sorry but to give you a correct set of data, more specific requirements are necessary - I guess this is your introduction to electricians - specific questions will get specific answers. I know it's not the answer that you may have hoped for but I hope it allows you to rephrase and get closer to the answer you require. all the best DMElectrical

Ok, I am going to keep this very simple. Electrician's mate- If your working on site you will need an ECS card with the very minimum, Construction H&S course pass. Most want some electrical knowledge, and the 18th Ed. You will need to be able to read wiring schematics and you will basically be pulling cables for 1st fix through voids etc. You should not be terminating connections or any testing of the circuits, that is the remit of the Electrician. By answering the 1st then the Electrician has the work to do for the 2nd fix, fitting faceplates, terminating and dressing the cables in the consumer unit and testing the circuits (important at several stages of the build for the EIC). Hope that answers your question in a nutshell (very broadly)?
