Tiling

Tiling onto floorboards

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.45 PM

I am attempting to replace a couple of cracked tiles in the kitchen. I have taken up the tiles and put down 6mm no more ply however when I dry laid the tiles on top there was a lip of about 5mm along one edge. The tiles are laid on backer board so I’m at a loss as to how this lippage has come about. My only option now I feel is to tile directly onto the floorboards with a thick bed in places to build it up. Would this be a wise decision or are there other options?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi paul85904, I know this may sound obvious. Have you removed all the adhesive off the 6mm no more ply before laying. Also checked the back of the tile? Are the tiles the same thickness as the ones you currently have on the floor as if there not and purchased as a close match that could be the answer. Also, for future reference use/request at least 12mm cement boards to tile on as there much more sturdy and this will prevent the floors cracking. Please, do not tile onto the floor board as this will move and crack the tile. Lastly use a rapid flexible adhesive and you can walk on it once laid within a few hours although 24hrs is always best. Thanks

bad idea if tile onto floorboards, This is the layer steps. In FLOOR BOARD 1st Plywood screws on it 2nd Detra Schluter base matt with 5mm trowel for adhesive tile 3rd Tiles with adhesive at the tile back and use 10mm trowel. OR In FLOOR BOARD 1st Bucker board 6mm-8mm with 8mm trowel for tile adhesive and apply Screws. 2nd Tile, use 10mm trowel for adhesive tiles Note: Use Rapid set Flexible adhesive and don't step till next day. Apply Adhesive into the back tiles always especially flooring. Any movement it wont loose or crack the tiles....
