Sewage smell in downstairs Toilet

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.45 PM

We have suddenly started getting a bad sewage smell in our downstairs toilet. It started this week. I've tried running water through the sink in case the water had evaporated in the trap, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. I removed the toilet and changed the pan connector. I put unblocker in both the sink and toilet waste pipe. The toilet seems to be flushing ok/as normal. There are no obvious signs of a leak behind the basin or sink. The smell seems to be coming from the toilet but can't figure out why. Any suggestions of what else to look for please?

There could be a potential that there is a blockage further down the system out in the street in the main sewage pipe work, the best way to investigate this is with a camera survey.

Is it a concealed cistern? or a boxing directly behind? Could be a stubby soil stack behind with an Air Admittance Valve that has failed, AAV let air into waste pipework to allow waste product to wash away without creating a vacuum, if this gets stuck open it will also allow foul air out of the system.

Hi, Check very closely where the pan connector fitted to your loo goes into the 100 mil outlet pipe. It has to be a perfect fit. Most odour problems emanate from this area. Check both ends. Guy

I would firstly get a plumber to check the seal around the pan connector to the toilet and to the 4 inch waste.
