Should I heat water at the same time as the radiators or separately.

I have a central heating system and a hot water tank. I can program them to heat independently or at the same time (motorised valve). Anyway, I used to heat the water for an hour before the heating came on - so (say) HW on 5-6 and heating on 6-9. However, it occurred to me that it might be more efficient to heat the water at the same time as the heating e.g. HW 6-7. The logic being that the additional length of heating pipe is relatively short (say 6 ft) compared to the whole CH system. Thus the additional heat required is marginal. Does that sound about right?

It depends on a lot of factors How cold is the water in the cylinder that needs heating. Is the system configured for hot water priority anyway. As some central heating systems are wired so if hot water and central heating are on together the hot water will automatically heat up first. But honestly I doubt if you will save anything as overall the same amount of energy is required.
