replacement for old halogen lighting transformer
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.44 PM
We have MR16 halogen spotlights in our kitchen. I recently replaced one of the old transformers which runs a batch of 3 lights and everything there is fine. Now the main group of 9 lights are flickering occasionally and not coming on - I assume the old transformer for these needs replacing. However, this transformer is much larger in size than the other transformer I replaced (presumably because it runs more lights?) and I need to know what new model to replace it with. The current transformer is Eterna lighting, model TR-06060. Pri: 240V - 50Hz, Sec: 12V - 60VA 5A.

Just replace them with 240v led lighting, mr16 halogens have been fazed out and you’ll eventually have to convert to led so I’d recommend doing it now and saving some money on your electric bill

I think in replacing the transformer you've not connected the wires back together tight enough and it's affecting the rest of fhe circuit. Take a look at your connection and redo it. A 60 VA transformer can run up to 3x20W halogen or one 50W halogen. To work out the size of transformer multiply the wattage of each bulb by the number of bulbs. 3×50W is 150VA. A 60VA one is usually used for just one bulb.

I wouldn’t bother changing the transformer I’d change all the lamps to led, and replace all the lampholders to gu10 ones if you can’t afford to change the lights as well.

I agree that replacing them with 230v LED’s is the best idea. Personally I use GU10 can do you can still replace the lamps and no need for transformers
