Fitting gutters on top of brick wall

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

We had someone replacing the leaking old cast gutter which was sitting on top of the brick wall on a 1890s house. The new gutters are Ogee plastic - should have gone for better:-(. Now, the fitter didn't use any supporting brackets, he just screwed the back side of gutter onto the wooden wallplate under the roof tiles. The reason he gave he says gutter needs to sit on the brick or else it would cause mould. However, with this fitting there is no drop/tilt in the gutter towards the drop pipe. On the contrary. With the heavy rain it just filled with water and bowed in the middle. [Besides, the join with the old one (my neighbour's one) is very poor with just a bit of sealant trying to join my plastic to his cast]. Any advice for better setup, especially on brackets and drop? Thanks

Best always use more brackets to hold the gutter in place

I believe that the majority of concerns have actually been answered within the question! Sounds like a bodge job from start to finish. Sounds as though you have a bucket on the side of your house, not a gutter and this combined with leaks that will occur due to screws in the gutter is more likely to cause mould/damp issues than what your fitter suggested. Without pictures it’s hard to assess correctly but it may be that specialised brackets are required as well as unscrewed gutter and also the correct “run off” to send the rainwater where it should be going away, safely from your property. There are also converter joints to connect old cast gutters to modern UPVc. Give us a call if we can assist further

The fascia brackets are meant to be fixed every 800mm (minimum) to stop any sagging/warping of the gutter & to create the fall (towards the outlet) Sounds like you’ve had someone in who just wanted to cut corners & save a few £ on brackets. No other option, Needs taking out & re doing correctly.

Do you mean “sat on bricks” as in brick corbels (brick stuck out like a shelf) If so then he’s sort of replicated how it would have been originally, and their should be enough bricks/corbels, to support the whole length of guttering. Guttering can actually be level if that’s the only solution, as water will always find the outlet as it deepens. With regards the joint with your neighbours, he should definitely have put a proper plastic to cast connection, you can buy these, it’s like a sleeve. Never the best connection, but it’s better than just siliconing up.
