Newly Plastered walls not adhered to artex

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.06 PM

Thank you for your help guys. I was told walls were keyed, PVA, bonding plaster and one coat of plaster. My paintwork looked great apart from the cracks on the wall which proved none of the plaster had stuck. Not sure if he tested for asbestos? He never mentioned it. The bumpy parts look like they were lightly sanded. The shape was a wavy pointed pattern. The sheets that came off were 3-4 mm thick with indentations from the artex and very fragile. My new plasterer will be using blur grit. Fingers crossed it works this time. Just vexed to be going through all that again. Cheers All living room walls were plastered over artex. I noticed fine cracks after the window wall was plastered last September, a period of warm weather where doors and windows were open. This was 15 days after it was plastered. I tapped the wall and in areas it sounded hollow behind the plaster. Tradesman sent a message to say it was because the artex wasn't bonded to original wall and there was nothing he could do as he was only paid to plaster it and I would have to take it back to the original wall. Would this not have been found during his preparation work? We had discussed if the walls needed batons and plasterboard prior to the start of the plaster work. He would have contacted me if there was a problem during these renovations. I painted this wall 2 days later and just hoped it would remain stable on the wall until I could afford to make any necessary repairs should they happen in the future. I then noticed long cracks on the wall next to it leading from the floor right up behind the radiator and around to the window frame, the same wall as mentioned in late December. This wall was painted 10 days after plastering in the last week of August. I took photos at every stage of the work and the wall was pink before I painted it, like the window wall. I asked the tradesman to come and look at the cracks. He didn't and told me I had now painted it too soon. He told me not to contact him again and discounted my photos etc.. I paid a plasterer to assess the cracks. He took a sample of plaster off the wall you could see the space behind it and the artex showing the plaster hadn't bonded to the artex and it would all need to come off. By the thickness of the peice of plaster he took off the wall on top of the artex, he said I could have painted it 3 days after plastering. He tested the artex. It was solidly fixed to the original wall. The plaster was removed the following week. The entire wall came away with a gentle pull with a trowel and cracked in all directions. None of it had bonded to both walls. The other areas in the room are fine. Can anyone advise me if I should have to be faced with all the upheaval and have to pay someone else again? Thank you.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Cherie, Sounds like a lack of prepwork on the plasterers part. If he hadnt sealed the existing wall the fresh plaster will not adhere to it and will blister/crack and fall off. There fore I am sorry to say this but sounds like the job has to be stripped back and a proffessional to take on the job. Cheers Dan

I think it all boils down to what the plasterer used to seal the artex,I personally have never sealed artex with pva,I have always used blue grit and have never had any comebacks

First did the plasterer advise on a asbestos check that's the first thing before any work comencess. Next what pattern was the Artex and did he scrape it before starting. Regarding it not bonding that sounds right but I've never had a comeback on Artex. If the plaster is pink leave it for about 2 or 3 days after that as it will be still a bit damp in the deeper areas of the Artex. When after that seal it up and don't leave it longer than 2 week unsealed. Next could you see the Artex through the plaster when dried if so it's been rushed and all sunk back as one coat.

Hi after over many years of dealing with artex …i now won’t skim over artex..it’s used to hide problems that hide beneath such as hollow backing plaster popped skim coat etc it’s a lottery if it works I’ve blue gritted and it’s still popped etc..generally plasterer’s will quote you happy to get the work instead of giving you the correct information Hopefully this helps
