Original tiled roof , no felt/membrane
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.06 PM
I live in a terrace which is over 100yrs old. There is no felt/membrane between the roof tiles and i think that water is running down the tiles and creating damp along 1 wall in the bedroom. Is it possible to lift all the slates, fit a membrane/felt, then refit the original slates? Or is there a cheaper solution? Its the original roof and there is no felt whatesover

Hi, the best option for you would be to have a ‘strip and re-slate’ carried out on your roof.
This involves, removing all your existing slates ,as well as your roof battens, then installing a breathable membrane along with new treated roof battens, then re installing your existing slates.
Whilst carrying out this process, it’s quite common, that your contractor will incur breakages (on average 25/30%) of existing slates, and should be replaced with re-claimed slates to match up with the rest….which I must add, have recently skyrocketed in price.
Also, I would strongly advise, that the contractor carries out a thorough inspection to the existing slates before any work is carried out, as, occasionally, the condition can be of a poor quality, to which, they should be probably advising a new roof with concrete interlocking tiles.
Best of luck

Hi, all the tiles need removing and also the roof battens, then a breathable felt membrane needs fitting and then battens and tiles re fitting which would preferably be new ones as a lot could get damaged in removal process.

You could strip the roof felt and battern then potentially use the old slates again depending on the condition of the slates.
Some will have fractures and won't be suitable so some replacements will be necessary.

Hi there , sorry to hear you have a leak.
Unfortunately you won't be able to install breathable membrane with out removing all the tiles and battens.
Membrane - battens - tiles
Only thing I can suggest is you find the spot where the water is coming in.
Hope that's been of any use to you!

If you are going to go to that degree , you would be as well stripping and renewing the roof
