Advice about entering into a contract with a trade

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.51 PM

Hi - I've been scammed by a trade I found on this site who left my property in an unsafe condition. I've found another trade to fix the issue but how can I protect myself from being scammed again? He's asking for 50% payment upfront (the previous one absconded with deceptive photos of glass roof panes being replaced but found out later that they weren't...). He suggested that I pay the scaffolders directly and the materials then pay the labour after the job is done - would this work? Do you have any other suggestions?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

my builder has insurance policy's available for any & all jobs booked through the site to safe guard against such things, for a fee. but realistically its up to you to do your due diligence on any tradesman you choose, while I understand you have already paid this once and feel aggrieved that it has not been carried out to your satisfaction, you cannot then treat everyone as untrusting or this will come back & bite you big style, there are as many bad customers as there are tradesmen in the world who talk the talk till it comes to settling the bill then there are all sorts of reasons for not paying it or delaying in paying it that is the world we live in, your tradesman has given you the choice of paying for materials & scaffolding direct therefore alleviating himself of the risk of leaving him massively out of pocket for scaffolding & materials that will be custom made, while only maybe losing out on his time travel costs is really a good deal for you, Personally I don't think he can do much else the fact your having to ask this question leads me to believe you might never be happy and if it was me that was your tradesman I would walk away. While I appreciate you feel let down your sending out to many red flags, your not the first person that's ever been scammed in the world and you definitely wont be the last, so it's best to put it behind you and learn from the experience. Most tradesmen require a deposit to try and lesson the risk as you don't know them and they don't know you. It's trust and if there is none then there is nothing, good luck Alex

I’m a Carpenter and I always ask for some of the money a week in advance to pay for materials and then the rest on day of completion. if I ever have someone who isn’t sure I will give the customer option they supply material I can give them receipts of materials or I order material and they can phone up and pay for it from a tradesperson point of view I want to make sure I’m not out of pocket. I think what the gentleman said is the best route to go down hope this helps

Always draw up a short contract, list of work and payment schedule alway pay at the end of the project, good builders don't ask for payment up front, ask for insurance docs, and recommendations X3 with contact numbers, if it's a bigger job! Sorry you we're scammed makes life hard when you're painted with the same brush !
