Eclectric Shower cuts out after half an hour

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.51 PM

I am refurbishing my house and updated quite a few things. There is an issue where the electric shower cuts out if runs for about half an hour. I have New Megaflo 250 litre tank on the ground floor Triton Shower in the loft bathroom connected via 10mm cable and 40amp circut breaker and 50amp saftey switch closer to the shower outside the bathroom The water pressure is fine in general but it does fall if you open another tap specially on another floor. I am not 100% if the shower cuts out if we open another tap (as the pressure drops) or it is happening due to electrical issue. I have already replaced the safety switch as it was getting too hot and it had a burn mark inside. The shower is Triton 10.2Kw\h and everything is brand new Would be great if someone can advise. Thanks

Hi, As you mentioned Burn marks, I would suggest not using it until you get a qualified electrician in to check it, just to be safe. Regards Stuart

It sounds as if there is a loose conductor in your safety switch which is potentially causing arcing/overheating of the circuit which will lead to your circuit breaker tripping. The reason it is taking half an hour to do so is because it is an overload fault which means the cable is gradually overheating and after 30 minutes it surpasses the breaker capacity and will cause it to trip.

It's possible when a second tap is open the Triton shower is not receiving the correct pressure to operate so cuts out .home owner needs to open old water tap or taps when shower is running to see if this is the case and if not then that can be proven

If your switch is showing evidence of burn marks on it there is either an overloading issue or loose connection . I don’t suggest for one minute you start taking things apart unless you are a qualified and registered electrician . Get your local qualified electrician to check it for you .
