Fuse box placement
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.50 PM
We have a large fusebox in the hallway which we would like to box in so that it looks better. The fuse box is screwed to two thick scrap pieces of wood. The wood is screwed onto the wall. I'd like to put the fusebox directly onto the wall and get rid of the wood so it doesn't stick out so much. Is this possible? How do you turn of the incoming electricity so that you can adjust the box position?

This should be done by a qualified professional and also notifiable work.

You need someone that is competent and technically if the fuse box (consumer unit) is not being moved just having the wooden spacers removed, then the circuits do not need to be disconnected and reconnected therefore the work is not notifiable. However, all electrical installations should be tested every 10 years, 5 years for rented properties, so an EICR (electrical installation condition report) could be carried out whilst the engineer is on site.

That would be more hassle than it's worth if I'm honest. You'd be better off leaving the wood panel it's attached to on the wall. It's been put there for a reason (most likely). If you're going to box it off anyway then just box it off with the wood panel there. Maybe paint it if you feel you would like that more before you box it off and make a cupboard. There is an isolation switch before the power reaches the consumer unit (fuse box). That will switch the power off to the consumer unit but DO NOT do it yourself and make sure you have a fully qualified electrician to carry out the work. They will need to switch the isolation switch off and secure it so it dose not switch on whilst they carry out work on your consumer unit.

You need a qualified electrician to prove the fuse board is dead before removing the cover.then the wood can be removed
