Area of water coming through felt, on pitched roof before roof tiles are placed
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.50 PM
Hi,I am having a brand new pitched roof fitted to a side extension.I have 2 areas approx 2 feet diameter where water is collected onto the flooring under this newly felt battened roof, before the roof tiles have been laid. Is this a problem or is it common for small areas to leak before the tiles are placed on the pitched roof?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In some cases no. but it can happen if the felt is pulled to tight the volume of water is restricted where to go and can leak from one of the nail holes that goes through the batten and felt into the rafter, or tracking along the batten to where it can escape hopefully they have pulled the felt up at the abutment. Or there can be another small hole in felt..
Hope this answers your question.

Check overlap of felt ,ie 100mm ,wind can blow this up causing water ingress ,NOT A PROBLEM ONCE TILED ,WIND WONT LIFT ,

The felt is not a watertight barrier, so yes this can happen prior to tiling even if fitter correctly.

If the water is coming in through one of the edges (top, sides or around a valux window) yes this is common. Once the tiles are on, the roofer will then install some sort of flashing. If the water is coming in from a random area of the felt then maybe the felt was damaged when being installed. It’s always good practice to make sure that the roof is water tight for a customer, if there is any chance of rain, but some time this cannot be helped.
