Need to lay plywood over all rooms for carpet and flooring combination?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.50 PM
I'm moving into a flat that needs a bit of work and wanted to install a carpet in the bedroom and then glue down flooring in the hallway and living room. I understand that I need to have plywood installed over the existing floorboards for the correct adhesion/ level. My question is, should I have plywood nailed down over the existing floorboards in all the rooms to ensure it's all level? or is it fine to leave the bedroom as is and just carpet over? Thanks All

It's best to have plywood installed over the existing floorboards in all the rooms if you plan on gluing down the flooring in the hallway and living room. This will ensure that the subfloor is level and smooth, which is necessary for proper adhesion of the flooring. If the subfloor is not level, the flooring may become uneven or develop bumps over time.
If you plan on carpeting the bedroom, you can leave the existing floorboards as they are. Carpet can be installed over existing floorboards, but it's important to ensure that the floorboards are clean, dry, and in good condition before installing the carpet.
It's important to keep in mind that installing plywood over the existing floorboards can add some height to the floor, which may affect the fit of doorways and transitions to other rooms or floors. So, it's best to consult with a professional flooring contractor or a carpenter to ensure that the installation will be done correctly and any potential issues are taken into account.

Hi it depends on the flooring you will use in the bedroom if your putting hard flooring down then plywood the bedroom to maintain the levels. If your carpeting assuming the existing floor boards are in good condition then leave it as the thickness of underlay and carpet will bring the levels up and you just need a carpet / flooring joining bar at the door

Personally I wouldn’t bother fitting plywood where your going to carpet especially if the floor boards are in ok condition. Just make sure you take the plywood into the door shuts of the rooms to carpet so you can sit a door plate on top of it and your underlay will the be there and there abouts flush with this then. If you ever need to get to the pipe work under floor boards where the carpet is you won’t be able to if it’s been ply boarded.

Agree with all above; the only consideration for boarding the bedrooms would be to maintain a level between the carpeted rooms and the wooden floor.
On a separate note, it might be worth checking your lease as many prohibit wooden or laminate flooring without the addition of large rugs, due to the noise it generates for the occupiers under you . . .

Putting plywood down won’t level floorboards It will make them higher but will still be the same level.
