Fused lights, RCD not tripping but no lights on 3 rooms?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

Had an issue with a ceiling spot light cluster, drop down and pull out the live wire Switching off the power circuit to that area, as was marked up on RCD board. the live wire touched the neutral and sparked. Can’t work out the lighting circuit it’s on, as turning the MCBs on and off individually, effected different banks of lights and there’s no single one remaining. Apart from 2x 5Amp switches that we never use.., should have tested before for live power before fiddling but was cautious and to start the RCD tripped but not any MCB.Now the RCD and MCB all holding is now holding in all rooms, sockets and lighting…but no lights to these rooms… Changed bulbs in all rooms and no lights…… Checked switches and lighting units…. None of them earthed, just capped off and a little lost as to what has blown or been damaged?… Changed light switches and tested, showing small current and 0-switch off and on shows 1.04-0.45 fluctuating but not mains voltage Any ideas of what I may have missed be very gratefully received and confused that theirs not a MCB standing out or tripping. Would a damage light socket cause this? Depends if wired in parallel or circuit? Any ideas would be fab thank you all in advance ***********NEW******* Hello That’s what’s stumping me, 3 rooms, well 2 and the broom cupboard but when switching off individual MCB. They all turn lights off in different places. So there is no one MCB that stands out to those specific rooms… Very strange as I thought it would be the same. All light switches are reading 0v in off position and small voltage when turned on. 1,5-.5v********

Please check if any other circuits have been affected. There is a possibility that either MCB or the RCD which tripped got damaged. Please test if there is any power on the feed side of the MCB as if there isn't that would prove that RCD is faulty. In this case I would not be able to advise remotely without taking few measurements personally. I wish I could've be of more help.

Please accept my apologies in advance, I am not trying to criticize the first poster here, however advising someone you do not know the capabilities of, to open a consumer unit is never appropriate, as the components within are potentially capable of causing electrocution to the person working on them (electrocution is death, it is not a shock) please do get a competent person (electrician) in to assess, DO NOT open the consumer unit. DO NOT OPEN.

I am an electrician, However I am not a doctor If you needed open heart surgery And I said I know a bit I've looked on Google would you let me operate on you. Just curious. If you don't fully understand your electrical installation. And are not a qualified competent person you could endanger your life. As could I performing open heart surgery.

Possible reverse polarity at DNO tails, first I should check for polarity after RCD testing.
