Converting a single skin detached garage to a home office.

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

Hello, looking for advice on how to insulate my detached garage for use as a home office. I plan to partition off half the garage so that the garage door and storage is kept intact. My question is how to properly insulate / damp proof so not the cause issues down the line. I am considering two options, 1 batten and insulated plasterboard or 2 studwork with insulation in between covered by plasterboard. Do I need to add a vapour barrier to the wall between the studs or battens or is there a recommended way of ensuring damp proofing? For the floor, I plan to float above a 50mm pir, for the ceiling I plan to insulate with rolls as you see in a loft. Any advice and guidance appreciated. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Personally I would create an internal stud wall filled with cavity batts ensuring it sits on a new dpc in connection with existing floors instal adequate air brick to both internal and external walls and board new stud with a vapour board

Hi you could use Insulated Back plasterboard above DPC level and use some air vents to help keep condensation away

Lay some blocks at the same height as your damp course on the inside of the building leaving a 25mm cavity, then build a stud wall from 89mm cls timber on top of that with breathable membrane wrapped around it the same way you would on a roof so it’s over lapped, then staple dpc all the way round the outside of the stud wall and fill with kingspan/celotex 70mm, then plasterboard and plaster, also raise the floor using timber and insulation and p5 moisture board and insulate any loft space above, feel free to ask any more questions if this isn’t 100% clear
