surveyor to estimate the cost of the wotk done

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

How can I find a professional, impartial surveyor able to accurately estimate the cost of the work done already on an extension to our house, unfinished, before we move forward? We have contracted a builder to do a small extension to the house. We paid 90% of the sum but he has done approximately by my opinion 40-50%. He has not shown up or explained his plan for the last 3 months. For some things that were in his quote and he was already paid for we had already had to hire qualified workers to finish them. Oxford based Many thanks

No one should ever ask for 90% of the money. Jobs should of been contracted to stage payments on completion of certain progress. I can offer an impartial survey as an experienced builder with over 20 years experience

Probably your best course of action would be to contact a Quantity Surveyor who should be able to a take off of materials used and time spent. This won't be cheap as they belong to a professional body, namely RICS. I hope you are able to resolve this issue.

There actually is no reason for a builder to take any money up front..we all have credit accounts. I simply ask clients to fund the materials as delivered and settle up at stage payments. Hence say a 30k job will be broken down into several stages at determined progress points. At such a point the builder is paid and all payments reconciled. This gives the client peace of mind and the builder confidance and security against financial loss. I offer free no obligation quotes which is essential as the first step of goodwill in any job. Both sides need to have confidance in one another. Ground rules are set out for both sides prior to work commencing.
