Ask a questionPlastering & Rendering
Thickness of render

In the process of building new timber frame house, some of which needs external render, along side the cedar cladding. Have built up the battens, for the render, which are 25mm less than the battens for the cladding, allowing me to over lap the cladding / render and have neat joins. This means I have about 25mm for both render board and render. Looking for a render that has the colour going through it all (ie no painting), smooth and water repellant. The top board would be aquapanel, as it bends, and is 12mm thick. We are happy to put a 6mm board below this to build up the profile, before rendering. My questions are as follows - If we just have the aquapannel, it will leave 12mm for render. Is this too much for a thin coat ? How do I deal with the gaps between boards ? If we go with a double render board it will leave about 6mm for render. Is this too thin ? Can we still put a mesh in the render to stop cracking? Update - It seems around 10mm is normally. Which means if I use two boards, the first one is just 2 mm, add this to the aquapanel 12mm, means I'll have 9mm left. 6 to 7mm base, with mesh, the 1 to 2mm top coat. Thank you for everyone who looked at this and answered. I can now get on and do the boarding.
