Ask a questionKitchen Fitting
Which brand is the better quality? Wren, B&Q or Homebase?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.32 PM
I’m looking to get my kitchen done, I’m in the preliminary stage where lm picking designs from all 3 showrooms. I plan to have the installation done separately by a kitchen fitter as l know it will be cheaper as getting with the 3 brands they charge a extra 1k on top. What l want to know is which of the 3 is of the better quality? I know howdens is very good but l have a budget.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I have worked for 5 years across Wren & B&Q in their Kitchen design teams so know the answer to this perfectly (although trade OPINIONS may vary).
Wren & Howdens are by far the two best options here for supply of Kitchens. Both provide semi or fully build units and have excellent front end design systems. They both compete directly to be the best value and have a similar standard for the entry level and higher quality options. Trades prefer Howdens as they will be given discounts (which may or may not be passed on to you), whereas Wren manufacture specially for orders. This basically means that if the fitter messes up Howdens have products in the warehouse they can collect and Wrens have to be ordered.
Wren have by far the biggest selection and best front end design setup and the initial designs, measurements and 3d renders SHOULD all be free. A deposit for Wren IS fully refundable (upto 30 days before delivery but listed in the terms and conditions) which will lock in deals that you have available, and think Howdens do similar.
The other suppliers are going to cost more and involve more labour, and therefore higher fitting charges due to flat pack units not being built.
Remember though, if YOU are organising fitters, THEY have to check and sign off the designs BEFORE your final order as any mistakes or mismeasurements will be chargeable to you.
Finally fitting, none of the companies charge an extra 1k for fitting, generally you should be expecting between 1/3 to 1/2 of the original cost so be prepared. Wren will charge THEIR install costs with is then topped up by fitters supplementary charges and Howdens don't fit.
Contact at least 3 fitters, meet them all and decide who YOU feel most comfortable with, look at their profile pictures and ask them for the most recent work and don't JUST go with cheapest costs if the fitters don't give you confidence they know their trades.
One extra piece of advice, never give ALL the money until the job is completed totally (including any snagging) but do expect a deposit to be requested. We personally do a 3 stage payment with deposit, interim and final payments all agreed in advance.
Hope that helps somewhat but feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

I have fit a few wren kitchens and have never had a problem with them, the customers I have dealt with have all been happy with the outcome. B&Q are also decent value for money. Not too sure on Homebase. Personally I would go for wren

I fitted when in my house it was good but still need fettling.
I would go for built up units if you could store them.
Howdens you need an acount are good followed by B&Q then homemade.
When done flat pack over 3 years with 0% finance.

Hi,
I have been fitting kitchens for 20 years. Fitted all brands to Wren, magnets, homebase, B&Q, ikea etc. and have found them all to be similar in quality and all made from the same materials in various designs. My personal opinion for overall quality combined with value for money will always be howdens.

Personally I like wren the most. Seems to come with everything every time and if there is a slight variation in planning or practice they get it sorted pretty quickly
