Type 1 MOT driveway

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

I am looking at changing my driveway from a small grass garden to something I can drive on temporarily before having a proper paved driveway in a year or two. What I want to know is if the grass and soil is dug out and disposed off could Type 1 MOT be use not just as the sub-base but as the top layer? Or will this be too loose? Any other suggestions welcome. Thank you

Hi Maddison, So long as it is well compacted it will do the job just fine in the mean time, and as a plus you will be able to use the material when you develop the drive into something more permanent.

As long as your sub-base is properly compacted, you should have no problems! "Mot Type 1 is the perfect sub-base for all patio and driveway projects and can even be used as a topper on existing driveways!" https://aggregatesdirect.co.uk/product/mot-type-1/

Yes you can. Make sure you have enough depth so when you take off the MOT to install the blocks you have sufficient depth for the driveway. Recommended depth on Good ground is 150mm of type 1,35mm sand 50mm block. You're total depth wants to be 235mm from finish level. Don't forget your geotextile membrane under the MOT. Tip for you to save on buying too much mot, install the base and just use the type one as a ramp on/off the drive. Hope that makes sense.

MOT type 1 is a good base for a drive way, the more it gets compacted the more solid it will become and will allow paving to be added at a later date. If this is to be the permanent base for future plans a membrane should be laid under the type 1 for weed and soil management. Be sure to compact the type 1 before used by vehicles so it doesn’t rut when driven on.

You can use type 1 compacted correctly but I would recommend using road planings and rolling them in it will be solid as a rock
