Whooshing noise when CH kicks in

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hi all, I’m intermittently getting what I can only describe as a sudden whoosh of water sound from the loft when the central heating kicks in. It doesn’t happen all the time and tends to only happen when the heating has previously been on and the house is already at a reasonable temperature and the boiler is no longer running. When the boiler reactivates is when we get the noise. We have a traditional boiler with a hot water tank on the middle floor, boiler down in the utility room and large water tanks in the loft. The noise will last no more than a few seconds and literally sounds like a large amount of water is rushing through pipes towards the boiler. I’ve checked for obvious things like air in the system and we don’t have any water coming out overflow pipes etc. I’m aware the boiler is now probably at an age where it needs replacing at c15 years old but other than that noise it’s all working ok. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks in advance

There is an air lock in the system

I agree, it sounds like an airlock issue with traditional gravity fed systems, depending on its location within the CH system, the most likely culprit is that the pump is dragging air into the system, most pumps in this type of system have 3 level settings, if you can locate it and lower it from one it’s 3 settings, it may eradicate the problem. Otherwise it would need a site visit to assess further. I would also check if there is a air release valve at HW cylinder level.

Sounds to me that you may have a high spot on the heating pipe work traping a small amount of air that cant get around the system to get released check for high spots in pipework in roof space and possabley fit an AAv to let out traped air

Potentially been what in the trade is known as pumping over, when it does this it will push water out and pull air in . Sounds like pipework in loft needs venting and investigate why there is air in system. If your heating is still running then it is not air locked, if one or two radiators are not working turn off the one's that are working it should force air through pipework and get those radiators working again, unless there is a blockage of some kind.

Best off calling a heating engineer to come and investigate and witness the noise your talking about
